And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the fields, keeping watch by night over their flocks. And an angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Goodwill towards man.: from: The Gospel of Luke. Henry came out of Midnight Mass smiling, the music of the choir still echoing in his ears. It wasn't often he could attend services, and he cherished each moment. Almost 500 years of life had not diminished his faith in his Lord, whose birth he celebrated this evening. Suddenly, Henry had a sense of a life force nearby that he knew well, Vicki. Turning quickly, he saw her, watching him with a tentative smile.
"Merry Christmas Henry" she whispered, suddenly unsure what else to say.
"Vicki" Henry grinned, going to her and kissing her gently. "What are you doing here?. I thought you disliked the holiday and wanted to spend the next few days alone?"
"I've been thinking about the look in your eyes last week when you mentioned coming here tonight. You never let go of your faith in God, and in people Henry, even after all you've seen and heard and been through. You even seem to have faith in me. Just about the only thing or person I've had faith in for years, is myself. I want to change that Henry, I want to give you a chance, give us a chance. I wanted to see you tonight to tell you that, and thank you, and wish you a Merry Christmas."
Henry's eyes glimmered with rare vampire tears, as he carefully took Vicki in his arms. In a voice choked with emotion he murmured,
"This is the greatest gift I think I have ever been given." |
